New owners should contact their title company or review their closing statement to determine who is responsible for paying the taxes. Payment of property tax depends on when the property is transferred. Taxes are due and payable on the first Monday of October and must be paid in full by last day of February of the following year to avoid interest.

      Description

      If you qualify for the property tax deferral program, the current taxes on your residence may be deferred until the death of the person receiving the deferral or the residence is sold, and shall be subject to simple interest at the rate of six percent (6%) a year. If a mortgage exists on the property, a letter of agreement will be required from the Mortgage Company. You have until December 31 of each tax year to apply. All participants must reapply each year.

      Eligibility

      If you are a single person age sixty-five (65) years of age or older, or to any married couple of which both are sixty-five (65) years of age or older or to any person who is totally and permanently disabled or to any family group which has more than one (1) person residing permanently in the principal residence, and are sixty-five (65) years of age or older, or totally and permanently disabled, whose combined gross income, as defined by the Internal Revenue Code is less than twenty-five thousand dollars ($25,000) a year, you may be eligible for this program.

        Description

        Provides financial assistance to enable people who meet income requirements to pay all or a portion of their property taxes with the objective of preventing them from becoming homeless. Tax freeze program: Qualifying homeowners age 65 and older can "freeze" the tax due on their property at the amount for the year they qualify, even if tax rates increase. Homeowners must have been 65 by December 31 of the tax year for which they are applying. Our office begins accepting applications to freeze taxes at the current amount due every October, and the deadline to apply for Tax Freeze is the following April 5. New applicants must come to our office, but no appointment is required. Bring the required documents to the Office of the Trustee and please arrive by 3:00 p.m. Tax relief program: Tennessee state law provides for property tax relief for low-income elderly and disabled homeowners, as well as disabled veteran homeowners or their surviving spouses. This is a state program funded by appropriations authorized by the General Assembly. Tax collecting officials, including county trustees, receive applications from taxpayers who may qualify. Applications must be filed each year to obtain relief.

        Required documents include: 1) Copy of property tax receipt 2) Deed, probated will, or other court document, if tax receipt is NOT in your name 3) Proof of income - social security less medicare deduction, supplemental security income, retirement or pension benefits, veterans' administration benefits, workers' compensation, salaries or wages, and interest or dividends 4) Proof of age - Medicare card or drivers license 5) Proof of principal residence - e.g voter registration card

        Eligibility

        General Eligibility: * Seniors 65+ and/or disabled taxpayers in Davidson County * Owns and uses the property on which he/she is applying as his/her primary residence * Applicant's name must be on deed * Application must be filed and taxes paid in full by April 5 Seniors 65 or Older: * Combined annual income of all owners of property does not exceed $60,000 (property tax freeze) or $33,460+ to be decided for 2023 income (property tax relief) * 65 or older on or before December 31 General Disabled: * Combined annual income of all owners of property does not exceed $42,620 (property tax freeze) or $29,860 (property tax relief) * Totally and permanently disabled, as rated by Social Security Administration or other qualified agency on or before December 31 * No age limit Disabled Veteran: *Must have been honorably discharged * Combined annual income of applicant, spouse, and all owners does not have an income limit * Disability must meet one of the following 1) Service-connected disability, resulting in - Paraplegia OR - Permanent paralysis of both legs and lower part of body OR - Total and permanent disability rating from a service-connected disability - A 100% total and permanent disability rating from being a prisoner of war.
