Description:
Provides low income individuals and communities access to educational, economic, nutritional, and social services at the Bedford County Neighborhood Service Center including LIHEAP gas, electric, propane, coal or wood payment assistance, monthly USDA commodities registration and distribution of food, weatherization programs, home-delivered and congregate meals for seniors and foster grandparent program.

Intake Process:
Apply directly through the website or print off application and bring it in to the center; (however, applicants with a cutoff notice must apply in person); may also call or walk in for information. For financial assistance programs, applicants will need: Photo ID for Head of Household, Social Security Card for all Household Members; proof of household income for all members over 18; current Utility Bill and 12 Month History from Utility Company if applying for utility assistance. The website has a list of the USDA Commodities Distribution sites in the county and a list of congregate meals sites (must pre-register for meals). The Clients will contact their local NSC office, and they will get the clients information and then get them signed up. For USDA Commodities, the federal poverty guidelines must be 186% of household income or lower; if clients receive TANF, FOODSTAMPS, LIHEAP, SSI or live in Public Housing they automatically qualify for the program.

Low income Bedford County residents; Congregate senior meals and home delivered meals and commodities are for persons 60 and older; weatherization program applicants must have a household income of 200% or lower of the Federal Poverty Guidelines and must own or rent the dwelling which needs improvement to lower energy costs and make air quality safe. The Foster Grandparent program is for persons 55 or older who can volunteer for at least 15 hours a week and who have limited income.
