Description:
Provides free state and federal tax preparation and filing assistance for the current tax year (does not support prior year tax returns) through website. For individuals needing to file both federal and state tax returns, both returns must be submitted and e-filed at the same time in order for service to be free. The program is usually available from the end of January to the middle of October.
NOTE: Taxpayers will need their Adjusted Gross Income (Line 8B) from last year's 1040 tax return form if filing with MyFreeTaxes for the first time; or obtain this number from your previous return by calling IRS at 1-800-908-9946

Intake Process:
Documents Needed:
1) Social Security or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) for each family member and working adult
2) 1095-A for anyone on the tax return who received a tax credit from the healthcare.gov marketplace
3) Childcare provider name, address, and tax ID, if applicable
4) Bank routing and account numbers for checking or savings account (if return qualifies for refund via secure direct deposit)
5) A valid email address
6) Last year's tax return with the Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) amount (on line 8B on the 1040 form)
Program Fees:
No fee for individuals or households with an income of $70,000 or less in 2023. If you start at www.MyFreeTaxes.com, select the !File myself! option, and use the referral link that we provide you to access the TaxSlayer software, you will not be charged. Fee varies if household income is over this amount (cost determined by tax software). Certain complex items on a tax return may also generate a fee.

Open to all, but individuals and households with an income above $70,000 in 2023 will have to pay a fee to file.

Documents needed: Required documents: 1) Photo ID for all adults (both spouses, if filing jointly) 2) Original Social Security Cards or ITINs for individual, spouse and all dependents OR Social Security/ITIN Verification Letter(s) issued by the Social Security Administration 3) Proof of income (W2 for each employer during the tax year, 1099s, Social Security Income, Unemployment, Interest, Cash Income, Gambling Winnings, retirement benefits, etc.) 4) Proof of expenses for all household members (e.g. 1098-T education/tuition statements, childcare expense statement, medical expenses, property tax, etc.) 5) Form 1095-A if you had health insurance through the Marketplace 6) Direct Deposit of Refunds: Checkbook with routing number and account number for direct deposit of refunds 7) Last year's tax return 8) Advanced child tax payments (if you received in 2022)

VITA volunteers do not prepare returns that include: * Combined household income over $70,000 * Farm, rental, foreign earned, clergy, or certain military income (rental income includes Airbnb) * Complicated or Advanced Schedule D * Loss from a business (Schedule C), but sites can prepare self-employment income if the business expenses were less than $25,000. * Un-reimbursed employee business expenses * Adoption credits * Sale of property (such as homes or other real estate) * Certain other advanced credits and deductions
