Description:

Provides part of the process of the authentication of a public document which has been notarized by a notary in Shelby County, which must then be taken or mailed to the Tennessee Secretary of State, Business Service Division to receive official authentication of the document (like for example, a college diploma); the apostille is often requested when certificates are required for application for a job or school or other type of program in a foreign country. An apostille or document authentication certifies the authenticity of the signature, seal and position of the official who has executed, issued or certified a copy of a public document; it enables a public document issued in one country to be recognized as valid in another country. This downtown Shelby County Clerk's office is the only clerk's office in Shelby County which is able to certify the notary's signature as the second step in the process, at a cost of $5.00 per document. An apostille requires that the county clerk's office in the county where the document was notarized must first certify the signature of the notary before it's sent to Nashville for final authentication.
