Description:
Provides the Memphis office of the TN Human Rights Commission, which enforces the TN Fair Employment Practices law by investigating complaints of discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations due to race, age, gender, creed/color, religion, familial status, national origin. This regional office serves West TN.
Provides assistance for people who have been denied equal access to employment, housing, or public buildings and services on the basis of race, color, creed, national origin, religion, sex, disability, familial status (housing only), and age (over 40 in employment). The Commission also ensures the State of Tennessee's compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, and national origin by state agencies receiving federal financial assistance. The Commission's mission is to safeguard individuals from discrimination through education and enforcement.
Provides assistance for people that have been denied equal access to employment or treated unfairly as employees, i.e., sexually harassed or denied equal pay for equal work, passed over for a promotion, denied training opportunities or fired on the basis of their Race, Color, Creed, National Origin, Religion, Sex, Disability, and Age (Over 40).
Also provides assistance for job applicants who feel they have been denied employment because of a military service obligation and persons needing help restoring job seniority and pension rights which have been withheld because of an absence from work due to service obligations.
Ensures that buildings, parking lots, sidewalks, parks and other areas used by the public are safe and free from structural obstacles which bar access by people who have mobility or sensory limitations and see that chirping traffic signals, curb cuts, signage and other enhancements that improve accessibility are implemented wherever possible.

Eligibility:
West TN residents. For employment/public accommodations investigations an employer must have at least 8 employees who work at least 20 weeks in a part-time or full-time status in a current or preceding year. For housing discrimination, the owner/landlord must have at least 1 or more unoccupied units and meet requirements of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
