Description:

Legal team offers families with children who are patients at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis assistance with issues that impact their child's health through direct legal services, social work services, education and advocacy. Priority legal assistance is provided in areas of: Income (help with appealing food stamp denials, health insurance, and cash and disability benefits like SSI/SSDI); Housing and Utilities (help with evictions, mold in a home, rodents, utility issues); Employment and Education (employment discrimination, enforcement of workplace rights, unemployment benefits, help with child's special education needs like IEPs, 504 plans, school discipline or expulsion issues); and Personal and Family Stability (help in getting orders of protection for domestic violence, custody issues, guardianship, conservatorship, living wills, power of attorney and advance medical directives.) CHiLD is a partnership between Memphis Area Legal Services, Le Bonheur Children's Hospital and the University of Memphis Law School. NOTE: A CHILD MUST BE A PATIENT AT LE BONHEUR CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL TO BE REFERRED TO THE PROGRAM from a LE BONHEUR HOSPITAL DOCTOR, NURSE OR SOCIAL WORKER FOR A MEMPHIS CHILD REFERRAL.

Intake Process:

Ask your Le Bonheur Children's Hospital doctor, nurse or social worker for a Memphis CHiLD referral.

Eligibility:

For most help, individuals must be a US citizen or legal resident, have low-come and limited assets and be seeking help with a civil legal issue that is within the priorities listed in the description. While most services are available only for low-income individuals and families, the team may consider helping clients with a higher income base on a case by case basis. There is no guarantee of legal representation as each case is reviewed separately.
