Description:

Issues drivers licenses for automobiles, motorcycles, trucks; conducts driving tests for obtaining/renewing TN licenses. NOTE: Truckers seeking commercial driver's licenses must test at Tennessee Technology Center, 550 Alabama. This center also issues handgun carry permits, provides driving records, issues ID only cards and handles drivers license reinstatements. This center has a self-service kiosk to renew or replace a TN driver's license or identification card. You must have had a previous license or ID and be 18 or older to use this service; no commercial driver's license can be renewed or replaced by these machines.

Hours:

Mon - Fri 8:30 am - 5:00 pm; Testing Hours: 8:30 am - 3:30 pm (arrive 30 minutes before closing)

Apply in person for written tests; schedule driving test in Shelby County by going online; check website for more information

Program Fees:

Driving Record for three years: $7.00/copy.

$12.50-$26.50/new license, based on age. Renewal fees vary. (Licenses available for mopeds and motor scooters with automatic transmissions not exceeding 125cc); $12.00/copy replacement licenses available at Reinstatement Building on Summer Ave and at East Shelby Driver Center.

Languages:

Driver Service Centers with computerized testing offer the test in Spanish, Korean or Japanese. Translation dictionaries are allowed, but no electronic devices (PDAs, smartphones or electronic dictionaries) or interpreters can assist during testing.

Eligibility:

Ages 16 and above may apply; ages 16-18 must submit minor/teen affidavit form signed by an an adult and school attendance form. Must pass tests given by the division, be resident of Tennessee, present proof of age/identification/Social Security number. Ages 14-15 must have parents sign affidavits of financial responsibility; those unable to obtain license for vehicular operation must verify age and identity to obtain state IDs.
