Seed Banks

Programs that collect, prepare and store a wide variety of seeds as a means of preserving global plant diversity, preventing the loss of endangered plant species, providing resources for re-vegetating areas where specific varieties of plants have disappeared, ensuring an ongoing supply of pest-resistant food crops and guaranteeing the ongoing availability of plant life for research purposes.

Tree Planting Ordinances/Funds

Programs that develop and oversee compliance with local ordinances which require tree planting to replace trees that have been removed or damaged during site development and/or construction, or to meet overall tree canopy cover or density standards in areas that have little or no natural tree cover. To fulfill the requirement, trees may be planted directly on the affected property, donated to a site such as a school or public park, or "banked" temporarily on public or private land for later transplantation; or the developer may pay into a dedicated municipal tree planting fund. Also included are programs that temporarily store trees while a site is being developed, which provide land that serves as an "in-ground" nursery where tree seeds, seedlings or small saplings are planted for later transplantation; or which create genetic reserves of tree species in locations that are outside their natural ranges.
