Environmental Beautification
Programs that solicit voluntary contributions, which may be monetary, in kind or volunteer service hours, to support any of a wide variety of efforts to preserve, protect or maintain the natural or urban environment including parks, sections of roadway, streams, subway stations and other similar resources.
Community/Nature Area Cleanup/Enhancement Projects
Programs that sponsor community beautification projects in which people, usually volunteers, pick up litter that accumulates on the highways, in rivers or streams, on beaches, in flood control channels or on other public property; maintain nature trails; pull weeds; repair fencing; fix broken equipment; or otherwise clean up, fix up or generally improve the appearance of the urban environment and its natural surroundings.
Programs that reduce the amount of trash on public property by enforcing litter laws and levying fines against violators.
Programs that are responsible for enforcement of ordinances which establish standards for the design, engineering, placement, construction and/or content of roadside advertising and associated structures as well as free standing, wall-mounted, and marquee signs that are located along city streets. The program may also investigate reports from the public regarding illegally posted or obstructing signs on public or private property and request the removal of problematic signs from public property. The objective of sign ordinances in most communities is to meet the need of businesses, public places and recreational sites to make their location known to shoppers, travelers and tourists while maintaining an attractive environment where people want to spend time (and money).
