Description:

FEMA will provide reimbursement for burial and funeral expenses incurred due to the death of persons in applicant's household due to COVID-19. FEMA will reimburse up to $9000 for single individuals and up to $35,500 for multiple individuals submitted by one applicant with verified expenses and documentation. You will have to ALREADY have paid or accrued funeral expenses to apply and show proof of this, among other documents. Applicants (not deceased) must be US citizens, non-citizen nationals or qualified aliens; death must have taken place after January 20, 2020 and must have occurred in the US, US territories or the District of Columbia; and the death certificate must mention COVID-19 as the cause of death or that COVID-19 played a part in the death. Death must have occurred between January 20, 2020 and May 11, 2023.

Hotline will remain active until September 30, 2025 and applications will continue to be taken until September 30, 2025.

Intake Process:

Documents & Information Needed: SSN for applicant and deceased; DOB for applicant and deceased; current mailing address for applicant; current telephone number for applicant; address or location where the deceased passed away; information about burial or funeral insurance policies (if applicable); information about other funeral assistance received, such as donations; CARES Act grants and assistance from voluntary organizations; and routing or accounting number of the applicant's checking or savings account (for direct deposit, if requested).

Documents Needed include copy of death certificate showing that death was caused by or was like a result of COVID-19 symptoms; death must have occurred in the US, US territories or District of Columbia; documents showing funeral expenses, such as receipts or funeral home contract, which must show the applicant's name as the person responsible for the expense, the deceased's name, the amount of the funeral expense and documents must show that the funeral expenses were incurred after January 20, 2020 and before May 11, 2023. The applicant must also provide FEMA with proof of funds received from other sources specifically used for funeral costs. COVID-19 Funeral Assistance may not duplicate benefits received from burial or funeral insurance or financial assistance received from voluntary agencies, government programs or agencies or other sources. COVID-19 Funeral Assistance will be reduced by the amount of other assistance the applicant received for the same expenses.

LIFE INSURANCE PROCEEDS ARE NOT CONSIDERED A DUPLICATION OF FUNERAL ASSISTANCE BENEFITS.
