Description
The Vehicle Inspection Program is responsible for the light duty automobile and truck emission testing program in Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County. The program became mandatory January 1, 1985, and is a centralized testing program. Before a vehicle owner can purchase the Metropolitan wheel tax license, he must show proof that the vehicle has met the allowable emission standards of the Vehicle Inspection Program. All 1975 and newer light duty (10,500 pounds and less gross vehicle weight rating) gas and diesel vehicles must be inspected. A passing emissions test is valid for 90 days. Please plan to have your vehicle inspected early allowing ample time for any necessary repairs prior to the expiration of your tags. If you have your vehicle tested prior to the expiration of your tags, and it fails, you are allowed a 30-day grace period from the date your tags expire in which to have your vehicle repaired, receive a passing emissions test and renew your tags. To be considered for exemption, The Metro Public Health Department's Vehicle Inspection Program requires that you submit a completed temporary emissions test exemption application and provide required documentation. If you have had repairs done to your vehicle related to a failed emission test, and the vehicle will not pass the emission test, you may be eligible for a waiver. A waiver allows you to renew your vehicle's registration without a passing vehicle emissions inspection. Waivers can be granted for qualifying repair expenditures.
Hours
Mon - Fri 8:00 am - 4:30 pm
Eligibility

Fees
Test fee: $9.00. Cash, credit cards, debit cards, and checks accepted. No bills larger than $20.00 are accepted.
