Description
Offers free sickle cell trait testing in partnership with Meharry Sickle Cell Center and 23andMe. The Sickle Cell Trait Screening Test detects abnormal types of hemoglobin in the blood. If abnormalities are found after the initial screening of blood or saliva, additional tests are performed to determine which type of abnormal hemoglobin is present. The test can be used by physicians to help identify sickle cell trait carriers and diagnose disorders such as sickle cell anemia, a genetic blood disorder caused by a gene mutation. Sickle cell anemia affects the shape of red blood cells that carry oxygen through the body, causing pain, anemia (low red blood cell count) and infections.
