While families and visitors spend time in the waiting rooms at Vanderbilt University Hospital (Adult Hospital) volunteers visit with them offering items of comfort. These items include snacks and activities found on the hospital activity cart. Items needed include: individually wrapped snacks, bottled water, canned soft drinks, fruit/juice boxes, travel-size toiletries and hygiene items (razors, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, hand sanitizer, dental floss, toothbrushes, mouthwash, laundry detergent and dryer sheets, reading glasses, and antibacterial wipes), and activities (playing cards, word search/crossword puzzle books, gently used paperbacks, coloring books, crayons, and recent magazines).
Volunteer Opportunities:
Volunteers 16 and older are welcome. The greatest need is Mon - Fri, 8:00 am - 6:00 pm. A minimum of 50 hours is required for the Adult Hospital & Clinics. This generally equates to a 2-3 hour shift once a week for approximately six months. College students must also commit to volunteering for AT LEAST two consecutive time periods (spring/summer, summer/fall, fall/winter, etc.) There are limited weekend and evening openings. Opportunities are available at University Hospital:Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE) Unit, Burn Center, Emergency Department (ED), Guest Ambassador, In-Patient Visitor (Heart Institute, Women's Health, General Medicine Unit), Music, Pastoral Care, Pet Therapy, and Waiting Room Hospitality/Activity Cart; The Vanderbilt Clinic:Guest Ambassador, Outpatient Physical or Occupational Therapy; Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center: Cancer Clinic Volunteer, Pet Therapy; Vanderbilt Health One Hundred Oaks: The Breast Center, Center for Women's Health, Dermatology Clinic Greeter, Guest Ambassadors, The Infusion Clinic, Musicians, Pediatric Rehabilitation Waiting Room, Pet Therapy, Card-Making Club Volunteers, and Vanderbilt Sewing Club. Potential volunteers should email the contact for their facility of choice to learn more and begin the recruitment process.
