Memphis Ambassadors Program; MAP

Description:

The Memphis Ambassadors Program is a year-round enrichment program for students with a GPA of 3.0 and above that serves between 400-500 youth across the city of Memphis in each council district. MAP is upheld by the Five Pillars: Leadership, Education, Entrepreneurship, Community Service, and Perseverance, and engages youth in grades 9-12 annually, MAP is designed to assist youth in their decision-making process about post-secondary life and the development of social, critical thinking, and leadership skills while receiving a monthly stipend. The program integrates a community, business, and neighborhood alliances curriculum. Ambassadors meet with a Youth Specialist once a week to engage in life skills training and goal setting. Ambassadors are also required to complete community service projects throughout the year to help them become more aware of their surroundings and become more involved in their community. The goal is to help young people develop into adulthood and provide them with mentors to guide them in their process. Young people who have come through our program tend to be more prepared for post-secondary education. More financially independent and have a heightened awareness about their city and community. Our young people and parents also make donations to underprivileged communities. Every year we donate more than 5000 school supplies, more than 400 pounds of peanut butter, and hats, coats, gloves, and scarves to youth who do not have them and give to our veterans

We teach the Ambassadors to "Love thy Neighbor" through service and giving. Here are a few other things we work with the Ambassadors on: "SEL" Social Emotional Learning, Community Engagement/Service, Post-Secondary Prep, Leadership Skills, Conflict Resolution, Critical/Analytical Thinking, Professional Development, Mental Health, Social Justice, Mentorship, Servant Leadership, Time Management, Monthly Stipend Check, Monthly Incentives, and College Tours.

During the summer, Ambassadors participate in a two-week Leadership Academy and receive additional life-developing and team working skills. Ambassadors who are seniors in high school and graduate from the program successfully will have the opportunity to receive internships within City Government.
