Description:

Provides food stamp EBT cards for purchase of food items only; expedites emergency services (receipt of coupons within 7 days after being determined eligible) for families/individuals with little or no income. Persons without an address may use that of a shelter, friend, or Department of Human Services. Customers may walk in to their local DHS office to apply, apply online or call to ask for an application to be mailed to them; call the Family Assistance Service Center tollfree number (866-311-4287) to request changes to existing food stamp case or to request that an application be mailed to them; along with the application they will receive a pre-paid envelope to return the application to the local office. Persons can also request an application or check on the status of their application by email or live chat through the website.

Intake Process:

DHS offices accept applications from walk-in clients, online or by mail. DHS mails applications upon request. Call or contact DHS through the website by email or live chat for information or to check on status of current application through the CASE CONNECT button (requires name, birthdate and last four digits of your SSN). Online applications may be filed by creating an account at www.tn.gov/humanservices. With an online account, applications and documents may be uploaded for processing.

Eligibility:

Applicants must be US citizens or legal aliens, reside in TN county in which applying, have access to cooking facilities (homeless shelters acceptable), and meet income guidelines based on federal poverty level. Income of entire household used to determine eligibility, except for ages 60 and older.
