Green Cemeteries

Taxonomy Code: PB-1400.2500

Cemeteries whose practices are structured to allow the bodies of those who are interred to decompose and recycle naturally. Bodies are prepared without chemical preservatives or disinfectants such as embalming fluid and buried in biodegradable coffins or shrouds (rather than burial vaults) in graves that are shallow enough to allow the same aerobic activity that is found in composting. Green cemeteries often use shrubs, trees, flat indigenous stones or other natural markers that do not intrude upon the landscape; and use of pesticides, herbicides and irrigation are avoided in maintenance of the grounds. Natural burials that permit full decomposition can take place in conventional cemeteries as well as dedicated natural burial grounds.
