Eligibility:
Those interested in starting a CASA program in their community should first determine if a CASA program already exists. If it doesn't, help us answer these questions;
Do the judges in the juvenile court in your county want a CASA program?
Will they be willing to help, within the boundaries of judicial ethics, the program obtain community support?
Is there a need in the community for CASA advocates?
The primary mission of CASA is to advocate for children in foster care. How many children are in foster care in the community?
How many cases of abuse and neglect involving the Department of Children's Services come before the juvenile court each year?
Handicap Accessible?
Yes
Is Shelter?
No
Volunteer Opportunities:
Advocates/Volunteers must be 21 years old, complete interview and background check that occurs before the volunteer goes through pre-service training, and attend a 30-35 hour pre-service training; CASA programs typically ask that the volunteer commit a year to the organization as the lifetime of the case is estimated to last that long.

Description
A Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer is a trained citizen who is appointed by a judge to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in court. A CASA volunteer provides a judge with carefully researched background of the child to help the court make a sound decision about that child's future. The CASA volunteer must determine if it is in a child's best interest to stay with his or her parents or guardians, be placed in foster care, be placed with other relatives, or be freed for permanent adoption. To prepare a recommendation, the CASA volunteer talks with the child, parents, family members, social workers, school officials, health providers and others who are knowledgeable about the child's history. The CASA volunteer also reviews all records pertaining to the child -- school, medical and caseworker reports; and other documents. A CASA volunteer usually spends about 10 hours doing research and conducting interviews prior to the first court appearance. More complicated cases take longer. Once initiated into the system, volunteers work about 10-15 hours a month and handle one or two cases at a time.
