CASA of Putnam County, Court Appointed Special Advocates

Description:

CASA of TN Valley's mission is to advocate for hope, healing, and permanency for abused and neglected children in juvenile court by providing trained volunteer advocates in Putnam County. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) volunteers are local citizens who are trained, background checked and sworn in under oath by the juvenile judge to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in DCS court. A CASA volunteer provides the court team and judge with up-to-date information on the child/children. This information can help the judge make a more informed decision for the child's future. The CASA volunteer talks with the child/children, parents, family members, social workers, school officials and others who are knowledgeable about the child/children's history. A CASA volunteer is required to spend 10-15 hours a month and will not be assigned more than one to two cases at a time. The CASA volunteer will travel with the child/children throughout their journey in court until safe permanency can be achieved.

      Description

A Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer is a trained citizen who is appointed by a judge to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in court. A CASA volunteer provides a judge with carefully researched background of the child to help the court make a sound decision about that child's future. The CASA volunteer must determine if it is in a child's best interest to stay with his or her parents or guardians, be placed in foster care, be placed with other relatives, or be freed for permanent adoption. To prepare a recommendation, the CASA volunteer talks with the child, parents, family members, social workers, school officials, health providers and others who are knowledgeable about the child's history. The CASA volunteer also reviews all records pertaining to the child -- school, medical and caseworker reports; and other documents. A CASA volunteer usually spends about 10 hours doing research and conducting interviews prior to the first court appearance. More complicated cases take longer. Once initiated into the system, volunteers work about 10-15 hours a month and handle one or two cases at a time.
