PENCIL Free School Supplies for MNPS Teachers
Description:
PENCIL's (Public Education Needs Community Involvement & Leadership) links community resources to Nashville public schools to help young people achieve academic success and prepare for life. Agency provides essential supplies, tutoring, career mentoring, and almost 5,000 teachers and more than 81,000 students in 159 Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS). Their core programs include:
DG PENCIL Box, the free teacher resource center, welcomes all MNPS educators to !shop! for in-demand, donated supplies once a month during the school year. Their impact is increased through pop-ups, giveaways, and Teachers 4 Teachers. In FY23, the agency distributed more than $3.5M in donated product. The free school supply program is only open to MNPS teachers.
Connected Literacy, supports high-impact tutoring as a crucial component of MNPS! Accelerating Scholars initiative by providing small-ratio reading support for students in grades 1-3.
PENCIL Partners matches the specific needs of each school with the unique attributes of a business, community group, or individual. The agency recruits, trains and maintains Partners to make a crucial impact at the 35 Career Academies in the MNPS Academies of Nashville. Their hands-on approach gives high school students unequalled learning opportunities by strengthening skills in specific focus areas, such as technology, hospitality, and healthcare. Partners share expertise, industry exposure, career paths, and more so that students gain workforce-ready skills and are prepared for employment or college after high school.
PENCIL is unique among local educational nonprofits and related entities in that it is the only organization specifically dedicated to linking the time, talent, and resources of the business community to our public schools. While PENCIL programs serve all MNPS students, they are of particular benefit to students who lack the financial means and schools that lack the community resources.
