Description:

Conexion Americas focuses on advocating for, and supporting the integration of, Latino families in three inter-dependent areas of human development: social integration, economic integration and civic integration. Programs include free help in obtaining an ITIN number; help with filing federal taxes during tax season; Puertas Abiertas, (which translates to Open Doors), which assists Latino families in achieving the dream of homeownership by offering financial education, counseling, and access to financing and the program also provides information to help homeowners avoid a foreclosure in difficult economic times; beginning and intermediate English as a Second Language classes offered to non-native English speakers with a curriculum that covers a broad spectrum of topics, and aims to improve English speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills; advocacy for Latino persons; Negocio Prospero (Prosperous Business), an introductory business course that provides aspiring business owners and micro-entrepreneurs useful tools and skills to launch, or improve the management and profitability of, their businesses with courses taught in Spanish; and Mesa Komal, a shared kitchen space for entrepreneurs who own or want to start their own food business; facility is operated by Conexion Americas.

Eligibility:

Latino individuals and families in the Middle TN area; participants in the Puertas Abiertas homeowner program must have an ITIN number; and priority is given to low-income and immigrant neighbors for rentals for the Mesa Komal shared kitchen facility; applicants for Mesa Komal will be assessed as to their willingness to start or improve an existing food business as well as their ability to cooperate and work alongside other entrepreneurs.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Full- and part-time Spanish-speaking and non-Spanish-speaking volunteers are welcome to teach an English as a Second Language (ESL) class; assist with childcare during Adult ESL classes and other workshops; help with middle-school and high-school programs as a tutor, speaker or mentor; work with our nationally recognized homeownership, taxpayer and small business development programs; interpret at workshops, meetings and special events; lead children!€™s activities at our parent engagement workshops; and help with set-up and registration at special events.
