Description:

Designated state agency on aging to administer programs for older persons. The agency oversees caregiver support programs, long-term care ombudsman programs, congregate and home meal delivery programs, the OPTIONS for Community Living program for adults with physical and/or cognitive disabilities, the Tennessee Public Guardianship for the Elderly program, the Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) fitness program, the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) for Medicare Participants, transportation assistance for older persons, and the Collaborative Response to Elder and Vulnerable Adult Abuse (CREVAA) program. Most of these programs are operated by local agencies that serve older adults in their communities.

Volunteer Opportunities:

The agency welcomes individuals who wish to serve as a volunteer ombudsman. An ombudsman visits residents in nursing homes or other long-term care facilities and establishes a regular presence in the facility. They provide information about resident rights, quality of care, and quality of life to residents and family members. Volunteers also observe conditions, advocate for residents, and handle simple complaints. Volunteers must be willing to complete a volunteer training certification program and want a responsible, challenging experience. The agency is also looking for people to help with Meals on Wheels, to drive seniors to their appointments, to give reassuring phone calls once a week or more often, and more.
