PANDAS/PANS

Taxonomy Code: YF-3000.6105

Related disorders affecting children and adolescents that are characterized by the sudden, rapid onset of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) symptoms in the aftermath of a strong stimulant to the immune system such as a viral or bacterial infection. OCD and tic symptoms may be accompanied by a variety of other neuropsychiatric symptoms including separation anxiety, generalized anxiety and episodes of panic, irritability, extreme mood swings, temper tantrums, immature behaviors (like talking "baby talk"), hyperactivity, handwriting changes and problems with attention and concentration, particularly at school. PANDAS is an abbreviation for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections; the term is used to describe a subset of children and adolescents who have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and/or tic disorders, and in whom symptoms worsen following strep infections such as strep throat and scarlet fever. In a condition known as Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS), similar symptoms have been correlated with infectious agents other than Streptococcus pyogenes, such as mycoplasma, mononucleosis, Lyme disease and the H1N1 flu virus.
