Description:
Protects basic civil liberties by addressing complaints about some legal matters, and maintains a complaints database. Advocacy and Intake Program provides legal representation in some cases, files briefs in others, and tries to resolve Constitutional violations without litigation. Organizes public education programs about civil liberties. Lobbies TN General Assembly in regard to civil liberties issues and law. Responds to media requests for information about ACLU/civil liberties issues and actions. Organizes coalitions regarding civil liberties such as speech and religion, privacy at home and workplace, discrimination, police misconduct, censorship in public schools and libraries, government documents, jail conditions, and fair treatment by government. Provides voter irregularities hotline activated on election days open during poll opening hours. Priority issues in TN are pursuing significant reform in the criminal justice system, protecting and expanding access to voting, defending a woman's right to comprehensive reproductive health care, protecting the First Amendment, safeguarding privacy rights against government surveillance, and advancing LGBTQ equality.
