Description:

Memphis Animal Services is the City of Memphis' animal care and control agency and shelter. Provides open-intake shelter for lost and homeless animals, pet adoption and placement, spay/neuter programs, dog licensing, public information/humane education and animal related volunteer opportunities in Memphis and Shelby County. One of the shelter's main goals is striving to become a total no-kill shelter. Beginning February 1, 2020, MPD Communications has handled animal control dispatching (complaints and bite cases, nuisance pickups and cruelty investigations); call the Memphis Police Department Non-Emergency Number (901-545-2677) to report sick/injured or loose/dangerous stray animals or animal cruelty cases. The MAS Pet Resource Center may be able to help with pet needs like pet food, vet services, spay/neuter, fence repair, pet deposits for housing, boarding costs, doghouses and other pet related needs for Shelby County residents in need. If a person finds a friendly, healthy pet, the best way to help is to keep them while you search for an owner. MAS can provide all needs for the pet and list them on their website. Intake Process:

All non-emergency intake (owned and strays) is by appointment only. To report an animal emergency (the pet is a threat to public safety or the pet is in need of immediate medical care), call 901-545-COPS (901-545-2677); Call or email to make appointment or visit website (see the website I Need Help with my Pet Page); accepts strays or surrendered pets from all residents of Shelby County if space is available. This agency only investigates animal nuisance calls within the city of Memphis, but accepts animals collected by other Shelby County government agencies.

Program Fees:

Fees for dog licenses, animal adoptions, animal ordinance violation citations and fees for recovering lost pets from the shelter; call for details. Pet adoption fees include spaying/neutering and vaccinations. Adoption Fees are as follows: $40.00 Large Adult Dogs (over 30 lbs/over 5 months) and adult cats (over 5 months); $80.00 small dogs (under 30 lbs), Puppies (under 5 months), Kittens (under 5 months); $20.00 for all pets on the urgent list. MAS offers microchips and engraved ID tags to the public for $5.00/each. Check social media Facebook page for special events with discounts for adoptions

Eligibility:

FOR ADOPTIONS: Anyone 18 years or older with valid state-issued ID; FOR INTAKE: MAS accepts pets from within the city of Memphis and Shelby County (excluding Bartlett, Collierville and Germantown, who have their own Animal control agencies); Shelby County Rabies Control will respond to animal nuisance calls outside the city and bring any captured animals to this shelter if needed. This agency's officers ONLY respond to animal nuisance calls within Memphis City Limits)

Volunteer Opportunities:

Volunteers needed for socializing pets, greeting visitors, helping with adoptions and lost and found animals, pet photography and bio-writing. Cat volunteer orientation is the first Sunday of the month at 2:00pm; Dog Volunteer Orientation is the third Saturday of the month at Noon.
