Description:

Starting in 2015, high school graduates in TN will be able to go to one of the 13 state community colleges, 27 colleges of applied technology (former TN Technology Centers) or other eligible institutions offering an associate's degree program for free for two years. TN residents who will be graduating from high school or who will earn a GED or HiSet diploma before the age of 19 are eligible and have to apply between August - November at the website. Applicants must also file the FAFSA (Free Application for Student Aid) and meet other requirements and deadlines.

TN Promise is a last-dollar scholarship, meaning the scholarship will cover tuition and fees not covered by the Pell grant, the HOPE scholarship, or other TN Student Assistance Award funding for persons in financial need. HOWEVER, THE PROGRAM IS OPEN TO ANY HS GRADUATES IN TN, REGARDLESS OF INCOME. The program also offers individual guidance for each participant from a mentor who will assist the student as he or she navigates the college admissions process.

Eligibility:

Graduates of TN High Schools who will graduate in 2015 or later (including home schooled youth) OR, prior to reaching 19 years of age, obtain a GED or HiSET diploma; requires mandatory college orientation and team meetings, and recipients must maintain at least 12 hours per semester, keep at least a 2.0 GPA and complete at least 8 hours of community service each semester; local non-profits will coordinate the mentoring and community services portion of the program.
