Description:

Provides information and care for orphaned or injured native species of wildlife, trains volunteers to do this work, offers outreach program using live birds of prey, and provides quarterly newsletter to foster appreciation and wise use of the environment. Covers 24 counties in north Mississippi through networking with MS State University. Provides care for orphaned/injured wild animals with the goal of returning rehabilitated ones back into the wild, and provides workshops/training for volunteers wanting to help. Also provides information/assistance to the public for the care of injured, orphaned, sick, and displaced wildlife; advises callers to locate professional, permitted rehabilitator in their areas and explains how to perform basic triage until the caller can get the animal to area licensed rehabber or participating veterinarian. NOTE: Does NOT handle nuisance wildlife such as those in attics and underneath houses. Call local animal control services for that. Also cannot provide assistance outside of Mississippi; birds from Tennessee are accepted.

Program Fees:

Membership Dues: $15.00/year individuals; $25.00/year families; Workshop participants pay for class materials, program fees $150.00 per program

Eligibility:

Persons who encounter an impaired wild animal in north MS or persons wishing to learn or volunteer about local wildlife or who wish to donate to the agency.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Provides opportunities for volunteers to be trained as wildlife rehabilitators through a free three-workshop training course; other volunteer opportunities include fundraising, carpentry, plumbing, masonry, photography, writing, public speaking, advertising/marketing, and veterinarian services. Volunteer wildlife rehabilitators must be trained by the center, be 18 and older and be MS residents; also must have adequate home facilities to foster animals out of reach of visitors or small children, have time and dedication for this task; must be ages 18 and older; volunteers must provide home-care feedings every 2-4 hours; cannot take animals to workplace or allow children to treat them as wild pets.
