Description:

Provides legal assistance in civil cases to individuals, families and communities. WTLS does not handle adult criminal cases, and will not take cases where a large sum of money could be won. If they are unable to take a case, they will usually refer to a private attorney. Provides legal representation for those seeking SS/SSI disability benefits, food stamp screening, education and outreach. Provides domestic abuse victims with legal assistance for divorce and orders of protection as well as legal needs assessments and related services. Provides emergency rent/utility assistance, advocacy and referrals to supportive programs for people with HIV/AIDS (see separate listing for details) Provides housing counseling in regard to the pre-purchase and pre-rental stages, home maintenance, and subsidized housing. Addresses homelessness, the enforcement of fair housing laws, and provides mortgage foreclosure assistance and eviction prevention assistance. Provides legal assistance for seniors seeking Medicaid using Qualified Income Trusts, referrals and ombudsman legal advice for seniors in long-term care facilities and their families about complaint resolution, and education on resident rights. Also help seniors trying to access benefits, senior issues with home titles, scams and identity theft, food security and consumer debt. Provides legal assistance with crime victims' compensation and advocacy. Provides consumer assistance with debt collection representation and advice. This agency serves residents of 17 West TN counties, including Benton, Carroll, Chester, Crockett, Decatur, Dyer, Gibson, Hardeman, Hardin, Haywood, Henry, Henderson, Lake, McNairy, Madison, Obion, and Weakley counties and has a main office in Jackson, with satellite offices in Dyersburg, Huntingdon and Selmer.

WTLS does not handle criminal cases and will not handle cases in which large sums of money could be won. Some services require that applicants be low income and low asset. If WTLS is unable to take a case, they will usually refer to a private attorney.
