Description:

Provides historic preservation services. The Memphis Landmarks Commission (MLC) is responsible for preserving and protecting the historic, architectural, and cultural landmarks in the city of Memphis. Residents who live within historic overlay districts in Memphis are required to have planned exterior changes to their properties pre-approved by the MLC. The MLC reviews zoning requests, and work that is visible from the street including new construction, demolition, relocation of structures, and different types of exterior alterations.

At present, there are 18 historic overlay districts administered by the Memphis Landmarks Commission. These include the following neighborhoods: Annesdale-Park, Annesdale-Snowden, Central Gardens, Collins Chapel, Cooper-Young, Cotton Row, Crosstown, Evergreen, Gayoso-Peabody, Glenview, Lea's Woods, Maxwellton, Rozelle-Annesdale, South Main, Speedway Terrace, Victorian Village, Vollintine-Evergreen and the Withers Home.

If a property owner living within a historic overlay district seeks a building permit for exterior work, the owner must receive a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) from the MLC. To obtain the COA, the property owner must submit a COA application to the MLC. The COA application must be submitted to the MLC by the appropriate application deadline.
