Description
Whole body donation helps medical researchers and doctors to identify better ways to treat a comprehensive range of illnesses and conditions. Whole body donors contribute to advances in medical and physician training; development of surgical procedures; treatment breakthroughs in areas such as gynecology, colon and liver illness, diabetes, and HIV; improved understanding of how diseases progress; development of life-changing medical devices; cancer protocols; treating spinal injuries; and enhanced drug delivery mechanisms.

Required Documents
Prospective donors must sign an Anatomical Bequest to Meharry Medical College form. The legal next of kin is responsible for carrying out the donor's wishes after death.
Eligibility
Donor must be at least 18 years of age; body may not have been autopsied, mutilated, or is decomposed; body cannot be extremely emaciated; may not weigh more than 160 pounds for women and 190 pounds for men; may not have severe decubitus ulcers (bed sores), be jaundiced, be in the fetal position, or have major limb amputations; may not have an infectious or contagious disease (HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B or C; prions; tuberculosis; or MRSA).
Fees
No fee. Meharry will pay for transportation of the body up to 200 miles. The university will also pay for biocremation of the remains, which can be returned to the family or interred in the Meharry Cemetery Plot at Woodlawn Cemetery in Nashville.
Intake Procedure
If the donor dies in a medical facility or hospice organization, the staff should contact Meharry's Anatomical Donation Program and transportation will be arranged. If the donor does not die in a medical facility or under hospice care, the family should contact local law enforcement. If no autopsy is required, the coroner can contact Meharry's Anatomical Donation Program.

Eligibility
All matriculating students must have successfully completed at least 90 semester hours/140 quarter hours. It is highly recommended that all matriculating students will have received a bachelor's degree from an accredited, four-year college or university prior to matriculation to the Meharry School of Dentistry. Online and introductory courses will not be accepted towards required prerequisites.

Every applicant must take the Dental Admission Test (DAT), complete the American Association of Dental Schools Application and supplemental application, and submit letters of recommendation. Eligibility
Medical Admissions requires a Bachelorâs Degree to be admitted. All premedical education must be taken at an accredited college in the United States or Canada including the courses listed on the website as requirements for admission. Applicants must have taken the MCAT within the last three years.

Intake Procedure
Candidates may apply anytime between June 1 ÂÂâ December 15. Complete an online application through the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS). Those applicants who attend, or who have recently graduated from, an undergraduate institution or a post baccalaureate premedical program which offers a Health Professional Advisor or Advisory Committee should submit a letter from this person or committee; this letter should be sent to AMCAS as described above. If no such institutional letter is available, the applicant should substitute a minimum of three (3) individual letters, including two from science professors. These letters should be sent to AMCAS.
