Description:

The Organized Neighbors of Edgehill (ONE), was birthed in 1968 as an nonprofit arm of Edgehill United Methodist Church (EUMC). Under the pastoral leadership of Pastor Bill Barnes and in partnership with Edgehill residents, the organization became a model for the city of how residents could come together.

A major strength of ONE is its rich history in a very diverse and historic neighborhood. Edgehill is one of Nashville's oldest neighborhoods and over the years it has been reshaped again and again. However, through it all runs a common thread of vision, perseverance, and diversity. In the face of natural disasters, urban renewal, and the continual encroachment on neighborhood boundaries, the residents of Edgehill have maintained solidarity through strong neighborhood identity. As a result, Edgehill has been recognized as one of Nashville's most vocal and active communities by the Nashville Civic Design Center, 2003.

The second iteration of ONE began in 1991 and the organization continues to exist to give residents a voice to express their concerns and provide the tools to effectively take action on issues most important to them. ONE organizes around issues like crime reduction, public school monitoring, healthy food access, and affordable housing.

Under the ONE umbrella are the following programs:

(1) The Edgehill Family Resource Center which connects the community to much needed services; the ONE/Barnes Scholarship Program provides financial resources for higher education with mentorship and support to send Edgehill students to an accredited college, university, or trade school; (2) the ONE/Barnes Scholarship Program provides scholarships to students of all ages who live in the Edgehill area as well as the Legacy Scholarship Program for students who still have family members living in Edgehill; (3) the ONE housing program provides some of the residents a chance to stay in Edgehill through purchasing an affordable home and home rental; (4) the Terrance Murray Memorial Edgehill Community Garden which is provided for seniors and youth in the Edgehill community who reside in public housing or low-income housing a space to grow and harvest fresh vegetables for their personal use; and (5) the Family Collective, which identifies individuals who need assistance to avoid homelessness, providing resources for childcare, mentorship and motivation, providing tools on how to stay healthy, and learning to foster positive relationships.
