Description:

UT/TSU Extension serves the citizens of Davidson County with educational programs in the areas of Agriculture, Family and Consumer Sciences, Community Resource Development, and 4-H Youth Development. They are an outreach branch of the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture, providing research-based solutions and information to the citizens of Tennessee. Provides information on gardening, farming, 4-H clubs and nutrition education. Provides information and workshops on money management, needlework, family life, energy/environment, weight control, stress management, nutrition for better health, leadership development, and personal growth. Sponsors the Expanded Food and Nutritional Education Program (EFNEP) for adults with instruction in food preparation/preservation, menu planning, and budgeting. Sponsors Jan-March meetings on topics such as crop and beef cattle production. Sponsors agribusiness workshops and seminars. Supplies containers for mailing soil samples to Nashville for analysis. (Individuals are responsible for mailing samples.) Provides information on livestock, beef, swine and horses. Offers horse management seminar each winter. Call local extension office or (800) 345-0561 for details. Sponsors Tennessee's MANAGE program to help farm families deal with financial difficulties and related stress. MANAGE offers workshops, group meetings, and individual farm and home visits. Publishes information on agriculture, adult home economics, food marketing, and agribusiness. Co-parenting classes are offered by some county extension offices for divorcing parents of children under the age of 18 and an office serves each county in Tennessee.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Volunteers are welcome. Adults may help with the 4-H program by serving as judges, club or project leaders, chaperones, resource persons, or promoters. The organization leader coordinates an overall club program and the activities of members and other leaders. He or she serves as the club's communication link with the county Extension staff and the 4-H and Youth Council. Project leaders work with groups of members who are all enrolled in the same project. They help members set their individual project goals, teach new skills in project meetings, prepare for related activities such as demonstrations or judging, complete project records and prepare projects for exhibit. They are currently looking for Project Leader Volunteers for the following groups: Makerspace (3D Printing, littleBits Electronics kits, MakeyMakey, Lego Mindstorm Robots, Scratch, etc.); Shooting Sports (BB and archery); Poultry Judging Team; Wildlife Judging Team; and Horse Club (Hippology, Horse Bowl, Horse Judging Team). Activity leaders are volunteers representing local businesses or organizations willing to work with groups in 4-H activities. Activity leaders come to existing 4-H clubs and offer suitable programming on their area of expertise. Complete the online volunteer interest form to start the volunteer process.     4-H overnight and day camp programs engage youth in social events, recreational pursuits, and educational opportunities. Campers can participate in a myriad of activities such as swimming, crafting, science experiments, and cooking.         Description

        Master Gardener Program This 13 week program is designed to train volunteers in all aspects of gardening and horticulture topics such as basic gardening, botany, fruit and vegetables, herbaceous and woody ornamentals, and turf grass management. Participants also learn how to identify and control insects, diseases and weeds. Specialized instruction dealing with soil, lawn and garden equipment, landscaping, herbs, organic gardening and composting are also included in this program. After completing the 13 week program volunteers return horticulture services by volunteering in the community by working on horticultural related community service projects. Junior Master Gardener Program This program is presented as a week-long, day-camp for youth, ages 9 to 14. The camp is open to Home-Schooled, Kids Clubs, 4-H Clubs, Boy and Girl Scouts, Church Youth Groups, and any youth interested in learning about gardening in general. Campers learn about soil testing, composting, basic botany, raised bed vegetable gardening, floral arranging, organic gardening, plant propagation, insects and many other topics. Educational sessions are presented as lecture and hands-on learning activities. The $50 fee includes healthy refreshments for morning and afternoon breaks, Gardening Handbook, Tee Shirt, and Hands-on Project materials. Water is provided, but each Camper will bring their lunch.

        Hours

        The Master Gardener training classes are generally held once per week from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm on Thursday night. The classes are generally scheduled to start the 1st or 2nd week in February. The Junior Master Gardener day-camp is scheduled during the month of June, 9 am to 3 pm, Monday to Friday.

        Eligibility

        The Master Gardener program is for adults 18 and over. The Junior Master Gardener program is for youth ages 9 to 14 years.

        Fees

        The fee for the Master Gardener program is $150 per person; $250 per couple (couple would share one book). Call or visit the website for fee information for the Junior Master Gardener class. Fees are subject to change.

                Description

                4-H encourages diverse groups of youth to develop their unique skills and talents to the fullest potential. Young people participate in 4-H through clubs, special interest groups, after-school programs, camps and many other activities. Learning by doing through hands on activities and community involvement empowers 4-Hers to develop and strengthen life skills. 4-H is a family affair. This includes the parent-child relationship and the extended family of community and state. It is a unique blend of government, private business and volunteers working together to broaden the horizons of Davidson County's young people. Youth participate in 4-H through school 4-H clubs, community clubs, special interest groups, after-school programs, camps and many other activities. Although there are many common activities, each county in Tennessee has its own unique programs and areas of emphasis.
