Description

Special Education: Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) & 504: Parents/caregivers often find it difficult to get their child evaluated at the school level. When that is achieved, they often have to advocate for needed services even when their child qualifies. Staff work with parents/caregivers to understand their rights, the laws that cover their children's educational needs, and to actively engage in the process of developing educational plans that benefit their child. Staff can also work with parents to advocate for behavioral health services from private insurance and TennCare.

        Description

Offers free and voluntary mental health screenings to youth in Middle Tennessee emphasizing prevention and early intervention. Our Youth Screen program grew out of "TeenScreen," developed by Columbia University and it uses the same, evidence-based screening tool. Our screening tool is a reliable, user-friendly, voluntary, and confidential computer-based screening instrument, that assists screeners in identifying mental health, suicide, and substance abuse risks, that if unaddressed could interfere with the health, well-being, and functioning of youth. Youth Screen's primary goal is to identify youth with mental health risks before they fall behind in school, end up in trouble, or attempt to take their own lives and to offer the families of these youth the opportunity to connect with resources and services in the community as needed. In addition, Youth Screen works to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues. TN Voices can assist you in implementing Youth Screen in your community. The program consists of a licensed-eligible Program Manager, a Case Manager, trained bachelors and masters level interns and community volunteers, and TVC’s Clinical Director who serves as the program’s licensed clinical supervisor and consultant.

Offers several parenting education courses including Common Sense Parenting, Nurturing Parenting, Parent 2 Parent Advocacy Training, and Strengthening Families. Common Sense Parenting (CSP) is a parenting program that can be applied to every family. The program’s easy-to-learn techniques address issues of communication, discipline, decision making, relationships, self-control, and school success. Common Sense Parenting is a six (6) session program, 1 class per week. The Nurturing Parenting Program is a family-centered initiative designed to build nurturing parenting skills. The goal is to provide families with the information and skills they need to most effectively care for and nurture their children, develop support and create a healthy environment in which their children will thrive. Nurturing Parenting classes are 7-12 sessions in length and offered in community settings. The classes include activities on positive parenting skills, communication, and healthy physical and emotional development. Classes are designed to build self-awareness, positive self-esteem, and empathy; teach positive discipline; enhance family communication, and teach role/developmental expectations. Parent-2-Parent is a program facilitated by parents who have successfully accessed the mental health, judicial, and educational systems to support their child. They are committed to sharing their journey and increasing your knowledge, helping you learn to effectively advocate and support your child as well as support other parents in your community. Parent 2 Parent Advocacy Training is a 14-16 hour course for caregivers to become volunteer advocates for other parents. The Strengthening Families Program is a short-term, high-quality, evidence-based program offered to at-risk youth ages 6-17 proven to be effective in substance use prevention and co-occurring disorders. Using trained providers and partnering with parents at all levels, the program offers an effective community-based, group approach to prevention by strengthening the family and offering skill-building support to youth and their parents/caregivers. By increasing the decision-making and coping skills of youth and the behavior management skills of caregivers, as well as strengthening an individual community-based system of support for each family, youth with complex needs will be able to successfully remain in their home, school, and community and have the resiliency to avoid future substance use.

This means that groups are co-facilitated by a parent of a child with mental health concerns and a professional with mental health experience. This is in keeping with the core values of the System of Care philosophy mentioned earlier, that parents are full partners in the program development and implementation process. Outreach Specialists train both the parent and the professional in this model and the procedures support groups. Support groups are a free service to families. Childcare is often provided to make it easier for families to participate. Current groups are always listed in the Networker, TN Voices quarterly newsletter. Groups are located in East, West, and Middle TN. Each group is assigned to a specific Outreach Specialist to help with facilitation and management, giving the group co-facilitators a direct staff person to contact if any assistance is needed.

Staff can also work with parents to advocate for behavioral health services from private insurance and TennCare.
