Nashville State Prison for Women; DJRC; TPFW

Description:

DJRC, or the Debra K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center (formerly known as the Tennessee Prison for Women or TPFW), located in Nashville, is the primary facility for female offenders in the state. The facility also houses all custody levels of inmates, including females with death sentences, work releases and pre-release participants. The security designation is maximum.

TPFW offers a multitude of educational and vocational programs to meet the rehabilitative needs of the offenders. Educational programs include adult basic education, high school equivalency testing and special education classes. Vocational classes include computer application and literacy, cosmetology, culinary arts and career management for success. Lipscomb University offers classes that allow offenders to achieve a college degree while incarcerated.

TPFW is the only prison in Tennessee to offer the BEST (Building Entrepreneurship for Success in Tennessee) program. This program seeks to empower individuals with the knowledge of starting their own business upon release from custody and to give them the knowledge of being great employees and giving back to the community.

TRICOR provides job opportunities for both the main prison and the annex.

Offenders have access to a full range of psychological and treatment programs which include substance use and anger management. TPFW offers a 64-bed intensive drug and alcohol treatment program called the Correctional Recovery Academy. TPFW maintains and operates a fully functioning clinic/infirmary that offers a variety of women services.

TPFW offers a weekend child visitation program which has received national recognition. The program includes grandmothers as well as mothers.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Volunteers play a critical role in successful reentry. Volunteers are mentors, teachers, coaches and artists facilitating services at all prisons statewide. Those interested in volunteering may attend the Citizens' Correctional Academy, which is offered to Tennesseans who: are 18 or older, do not have a family member incarcerated in a Tennessee prison or on Community Supervision, have no criminal history other than minor traffic violations, and are able to attend all education sessions and the graduation ceremony in the Nashville area. Volunteers may also apply directly without attending the Citizens' Correctional Academy by completing the online volunteer application. All volunteers will be required to submit references and undergo a background check.
