Description:
Provides free or reduced cost legal help for qualifying low income residents of Fayette, Lauderdale, Shelby or Tipton Counties. Persons must apply online; if their initial application indicates that they may qualify for assistance, they will be contacted by phone from staff from either the Memphis Area Legal Services or Community Legal Center for further screening. Program is sponsored by the Memphis Bar Foundation. This program can help persons with legal issues regarding benefits and healthcare, consumer and individual rights, elder law, employment, income or tax issues; family law, housing; immigration and veterans benefits. THEY DO NOT ASSIST WITH CRIMINAL CASES OR VIOLATIONS, OR WITH THE FOLLOWING LEGAL ISSUES: AGRICULTURAL WORKERS ISSUES; WAGE CLAIM ISSUES; DRIVING ISSUES; EMANCIPATION OF A MINOR; JUVENILE DELINQUENCY; MEDICAL MALPRACTICE; MUNICIPAL LEGAL NEEDS; PERSONAL INJURY; PRE-PURCHASES/REVERSE MORTGAGE COUNSELING; PRODUCT LIABILITY; STATE TAX RETURN OR OTHER STATE TAX ISSUES; TAX PREPARATION OR FILING OF TIMELY FEDERAL INCOME TAX RETURN; OR WORKMEN'S COMPENSATION.

Intake Process:
Apply Online; application takes 15-20 minutes; applicants will need: number of persons in their household, monthly income, value of personal assets (such as amount of money in your bank account), value of any rental or personal property and the value of a second vehicle if applicant has one; monthly household expenses such as rent/mortgage, child support payments, childcare fees, transportation costs, unreimbursed medical expenses, and federal taxes owed (if applicant owes back taxes to the IRS); contact information about the person or organization with whom you have a legal issue; and all upcoming court dates or deadlines if applicable.
