Needed items include: dry and canned dog, cat, and kitten food; KMR kitten formula; Esbilac puppy formula; cat litter; collars, leashes, and harnesses; Genteal eye drops; crates and carriers; bowls for food and water; baby gates; Feliway; Pill Pockets; washable cat toys; Kongs and Benebones; durable, washable dog toys; fishing pole-type cat toys; soft dog toys; spray cheese; peanut butter; hot dogs; dog and cat treats; Karunda beds; towels and blankets. The agency also maintains an Amazon wish list. Donations may be dropped off whenever the shelter is open; please call ahead if making a large donation. Opened/expired food and treats, used scratching posts, glass or ceramic containers, and retractable leashes cannot be accepted.

Volunteer Opportunities:

There are many opportunities in which volunteers can participate, including enrichment, grooming, marketing or clerical work, assisting with special events and clinics, advocating for spay/neuter, humane education, photography, or assisting with adoptions. Under 12 years old: please help the shelter through at home project opportunities including: donation drives, making dog treat bags, and making cat mats. Ages 12-15: these youth volunteers can come along with a parent or guardian to the shelter. These teens will work as a team with their adult partner, together at all times, and will be able to participate in many of the projects and jobs at the shelter. Ages 16-17: teen volunteers are approved to volunteer in any capacity (without an adult partner). They simply require a parent or guardian's sign-off before volunteering. All volunteers should complete an application, sign up for an orientation, do training, and pass a background check before volunteering. Group volunteers are also welcome and should complete a group volunteer application.

Intake Procedure

Once you arrive, take time to view all of the animals available for adoption. Adoption counselors and volunteers will be on site to guide you through every step of the adoption process. The adoption process includes: filling out an application, counseling session, and interacting with the animal you are interested in adopting. Please be sure to set aside several hours to complete the entire process of interaction and adopting a pet. MACC believes that introducing a new pet to your home should be a decision that involves all members of the family. If you have children living in your home, they should be a part of the adoption process.

    Description

    MACC Animal Control Officers help keep Nashville/Davidson County safe and rescue animals in need. MACC Animal Control Officers responds to calls from the public and government agencies, seven days a week. MACC is committed to the prevention of animal cruelty and the enforcement of anti-cruelty laws. Animal cruelty is defined as behaviors that cause unnecessary pain, suffering, distress, and/or the death of animal. These acts may be obvious aggressive acts against an animal intended to cause pain or suffering or they may result from a failure to provide basic care necessary to preserve an animal's well-being. Tennessee State law makes the following illegal under its animal cruelty and related laws. Animal fighting Injuring, maiming, or killing any animal Depriving an animal of necessary food or drink MACC Officers enforce Nashville city code and Tennessee State Statues pertaining to animals. They hold the responsibility for responding to requests for help with stray animals, dangerous animals, animals in distress/injured animals and many other issues involving animals. They help to provide resources and education to the public in relation to their pets, and are key players in the documentation, investigation, and prosecution of animal cruelty cases. MACC staff are often the first responders on scene where evidence of animal cruelty may be present. They also provide care for many animals every year that have been the victims of abuse and neglect. MACC works closely with local authorities to document, collect, and preserve evidence for further evaluation and prosecution.

      Description

      It is required for all dogs and cats six months or older to be vaccinated for rabies and registered with Davidson County. Registering your dog with the Davidson County may help us locate your animal in the event he/she gets lost. The person who finds your dog simply calls our office with your animal's tag number. Registration is required to stay at many dog boarding and daycare service facilities. Dog license tags issued pursuant to this chapter shall be supplied by the department of health, to be made available in its budget, out of the revenues of the metropolitan government. It shall be the duty of the owner to attach such license tag to a collar which shall be worn at all times by each dog licensed. In the event of the loss of such license tag, the department of health shall issue a duplicate tag, for which the owner shall pay a fee in accordance with the current fee schedule established by Section 8.04.130(A), and such duplicate tags shall be forthwith attached to the dog collar and at all times worn thereon; provided, that the collar may be removed in cases of hunting dogs while in chase or while in training. A dog tag shall not be transferable from one dog to another. No refunds shall be made on any dog license fee.

      Fees

      Animals must have a current rabies vaccination. Get your animal vaccinated at any Nashville/Davidson County area veterinarian clinic or other licensed provider. License Terms and Expiration Since rabies vaccinations typically last either one or three years (depending on the vaccination administered by your animal's vet), there are 1-year ($8.00) and 3-year rabies tags ($24.00).

      Get your dog or cat vaccinated for rabies and bring the vaccination information to MACC or complete the online order form.

          Description

          The MACC Foster Program seeks to provide supplemental care to animals with special needs, decrease euthanasia of animals, increase animal adoptions, and increase the community's involvement in caring for the community's animals. The ultimate goal of the foster care program is find a permanent home for the foster animal. Potential foster animals are initially processed according to MACC intake procedures. Each animal at least six months of age will be tested for heartworms or FELV/FIV and given vaccines, in accordance with regular intake protocol. Animals will be selected for participation in the Foster Program based on a holistic assessment of the animal and its needs (including known medical and behavioral conditions), the available Fosters and associated resources, MACC's capacity and resources, and other animals in need.

          Eligibility

          To become and remain a Volunteer Foster, a volunteer must: Sign up at Foster Dogs Nashville. You will receive a welcome email with an application that you can complete and email back, so that they have all of your information on file. Be at least 18 years old. Show proper photo identification (if driver's license does not reflect current address, must provide a bill /lease with current address). Be able to provide a safe, loving, and stable environment for the foster animal. Be able to transport the foster animal to and from MACC during normal MACC business hours for booster, recheck, and spay/neuter appointments. Be able to keep kittens and puppies separate from your own pets. Be approved by the Foster Coordinator. Be able and willing to satisfy, and actually adhere to, all terms and conditions of the Application, all policies and procedures outlined in the Foster Orientation, and all guidelines of this Policy.

          Fees

          No fee. You may be responsible for purchasing food and other supplies needed to care for your fosters at your home.
