Description:

Agency works with city and county governments, local health systems and non-profits to promote programs that tackle unhealthy housing issues in Memphis and Shelby County. Provides Master Home Environmentalist home inspector training which offers free training to become an MHE; also offers free healthy home checkups for certain targeted low income zip codes in Memphis and free green cleaning supply kits to improve home health for participants (for both renters and homeowners), and offers free training for Latino construction crews specializing in weatherization and home remediation for substandard housing and other topics. Healthy Home Checkups are free to homeowners or renters in parts of North Memphis, Orange Mound, Alcy Ball, Frayser, Westwood and Castalia Heights (see boundaries for eligible household in Eligibility field below); checkups take 1-2 hours and look at both interior and exterior hazards like structural issues with roofs and windows; lead paint, Carbon dioxide issues, mold, etc., and behavioral issues. Participating households receive free cleaning supplies and can be triaged to other program if needed (Lead Paint, Home Rehabilitation through Aging in Place, Asthma programs for children at Methodist LeBonheur); may be eligible for funding for small repairs like weatherstripping, programmable thermostats and solar exterior lighting.

Training to become a MHE (Master Home Environmentalist) or training programs for Latino construction workers is free and open to adults in Shelby County; Healthy Home Checkup Eligibility: Renters or homeowners in these targeted neighborhoods: North Memphis; Orange Mound; Alcy Ball; Frayser; Westwood & Castalia Heights. Must live within these boundaries to apply for free home health checkup: NORTH MEMPHIS BOUNDARIES: Wolf River on the north, AW Willis/North Parkway/Summer Avenue on the south; N Second street on the west and N. Graham on the east. ORANGE MOUND BOUNDARIES: Southern on the north, Lamar/Kimball on the south, East Parkway on the west and Semmes on the east; ALCY BALL BOUNDARIES: Ball to Ketchum on the north, WB Fowler Expressway on the South and Elvis Presley on the west; FRAYSER BOUNDARIES: Wolf River on the south, Mississippi River on the west, Loosahatchie River on the North and IC Railroad on the east; plus Westwood and Castalia Heights neighborhoods.
