Description:

The Lynching Sites Project is part of the nationwide Equal Justice Initiative founded by Brian Stevenson to help memorialize over 4000 known lynchings in the US between 1877 and 1950. The organization identifies lynching victims and sites and puts up place markers and holds event to mark the site; they also cultivate relationships among the ancestors of the victims and the perpetrators to facilitate healing and understanding. The Memphis chapter focuses on incidents in Shelby County.
