The Memphis Retired Teachers Association is a self-governing, non-profit organization, founded September 6, 2016. The organization began as an advocacy group made up of retired teachers but has expanded its membership to include retired individuals from other professions. The association has no ties to any national labor organizations. Through an elected Executive Committee, the members of MRTA set policies, make rules and regulations and decide how funds are budgeted. This group is made up of Retired individuals who pay annual dues.

The members commit to volunteerism with other groups such as NAACP, Botanic Gardens, Arise To Read, Tutoring programs at various schools, etc.

MRTA formed a scholarship committee that partners with two organizations (Step Ahead Foundation, Boys and Girls Clubs) who vet High School graduates who meet the eligibility requirements of their organizations and are referred to MRTA where the organization provides scholarship assistance to students who have met their eligibility requirements. MRTA sponsors activities and apply for grants to enable the organization to provide scholarships.

This organization also works to provide retirees with information regarding healthcare, insurance for retirees, and related services.
