Description:

Programs that provide partial income replacement for a limited period of time for eligible individuals who become unemployed. Apply for benefits online. 1099-G Tax Forms showing amount of unemployment claims paid in the previous year required for filing Federal Income tax will NOT be mailed from this department; they can only be printed from the website, available from the middle of January. NOTE: AS OF 5/16/16, RECERTIFICATION OF BENEFITS MUST BE DONE ONLINE INSTEAD OF CALLING AS PREVIOUSLY REQUIRED. There is also now a mobile app available from either the App Store or Google Play to apply and certify weekly from your mobile device; PLEASE NOTE: AS OF 2/12/18, THE MOBILE APP IS NO LONGER WORKING; PERSONS MUST RE-CERTIFY ON A COMPUTER, NOT A MOBILE DEVICE; IT WILL USUALLY TAKE 21 DAYS TO BEGIN RECEIVING BENEFITS.

Intake Process:

Must apply online by creating an "individual" account at the website (after you start creating an account and click "I agree" to two disclaimer screens, you will be given the option to apply for unemployment; Call for more information, use the chat service to email a live person or go to local career center to use computers to file claim. To file a claim, have ready a valid email address, your Social Security number, driver's license number, address, phone number and employment data for the past 18 months of employment, including employers' name, addresses and phone numbers, last day worked, and reason for separation (quit, fired, lack of work, laid off or job eliminated, etc). Persons who served in the military for the past 18 months must also provide form DD214 member 4. TN Unemployment Insurance claimants receive their benefits via the TN Automated Payment (TAP) debit card or direct deposit. To receive benefits by direct deposit, you'll need to provide your bank routing number and bank account number.

Weekly recertification of benefits must also be done online (instead of calling as before) through the jobs4TN.gov website. When you certify, you must provide the names, addresses and telephone numbers for 3 employers to whom you have applied that week. You will be given a date to begin certification. You must continue to certify weekly even if you have not received unemployment benefits. It will take 21 days to begin receiving benefits.

You can also upload a resume to this site to simplify the job application process. Google browsers work better than Internet Explorer browsers when filing.
