Description:

Safe Kids Mid-South, led by Le Bonheur Children's Hospital and part of a worldwide initiative, is a coalition of local leaders, health and safety professionals and advocates dedicated to the prevention of accidental childhood injuries. Efforts include education and awareness campaigns, "hands on" interactive safety lessons, environmental changes and advocacy for improvement of child safety laws. The coalition addresses car safety, safe firearm storage, sleeping safety for infants, bicycle and wheel safety, fire and scald burn safety, medication safety, pedestrian safety, sports safety, railroad safety, water safety and more.

The coalition provides free child safety seat checkups (in community events and by appointment), home safety checklists, Safety Fun Fests (interactive safety lessons for elementary students), bicycle safety rodeos and Splash Mid-South (low cost swimming lessons to underserved children, enhanced Lifeguard training and community CPR training) and a speaker's bureau.

Intake Process:

Call, email or visit website for information; call to make appointment to have your child safety seat inspected; visit the alternate website www.splashmidsouth.org to inquire about the water safety and swimming lessons.

Eligibility:

Safe Kids Mid-South Eligibility: Anyone interested in child safety or in becoming a member of the coalition in the Mid-South area; Splash Mid-South eligibility: children from low-income households who need swimming lessons between ages of 6-12 years old; must be on the Free School Lunch program, be able to attend 10 swim sessions and have their own swimsuit, goggles, towel and provide transportation to swim lesson sites
