Description:
Collects/preserves Shelby County history through awards, publications, educational materials, tours, historical markers, and special projects. Reviews and approves requests for new historical markers in the county. Sites must be 50 or more years old to qualify as being of historical interest and persons for consideration must be deceased. Members of the commission are nominated by the Shelby County Mayor and approved by the Shelby County Commission and serve four year terms.
Hours:
Meetings are held the second Thursday of the month at 3:00 pm at various locations that rotate throughout the county; see website for details; these meetings are open to the public
Intake Process:
Contact the historian by email or call or see Facebook page. If requests for historical markers are approved, person or group submitting application is responsible for paying for the marker. Agencies and organizations may request speakers.
Program Fees:
$35.00/application fee for historical markers which must be sponsored; historical presentations are free
Eligibility:
Persons interested in preserving the history of Shelby County;must be a resident of Shelby County to serve on commission
