Description:

Program offers two national service volunteer programs, the AmeriCorps Seniors Program with volunteers serving as Foster Grandparents and a state Americorps program. The Americorps Seniors programs bring children in need together with seniors in a mutually-beneficial experience. Foster Grandparent volunteers read, mentor and share time with children at schools, early childhood preschool centers, and residential treatment centers in Memphis and Shelby County, Fayette County, TN, and in DeSoto County, MS; the Americorps members provide literacy enrichment activities to children in Memphis, TN.

Eligibility:

The Americorps Seniors volunteers must be ages 55 and older, able to volunteer a minimum of 10 hours/week in Fayette or Shelby County, or DeSoto County, have limited income, pass a criminal background check and a physical exam to certify ability to care for children. Qualified participants receive small hourly stipend, transportation reimbursement, pre-service orientation and monthly training.

AmeriCorps: Must be at least 18 year or older, able to serve an average of 37.5 hours/week in Shelby County; pass a criminal background check and physical exam to certify ability to serve with children. Participants receive a monthly living allowance, and, if qualified, health care and/or child care benefits. Participants who successfully complete a service term receive a Segal Education award based on the length of their term, which can be used to pay for qualified educational expenses.
