Description:
Provides research on health disparities in Memphis and Shelby County. CHEER hosts focus groups with residents, health care providers, and community organizations to engage local persons in providing key insights, from their perspectives, regarding health disparities. Research will investigate health disparities in the Memphis area, one zip code at a time. Focuses also on finding innovative, community-based approaches to address diseases like breast cancer, depression, diabetes and high blood pressure, which are a leading cause of death in under-served African-American communities. Led by the University of TN Health Science Center Memphis with community partners LeMoyne-Owen College, Shelby County Health Department, Memphis Housing Authority, First Baptist Church Lauderdale and Mustard Seed.
