Bank on Memphis is an alliance of financial institutions who provide safe, affordable bank accounts to encourage persons who have never had a bank account or persons who are interested in re-establishing a relationship with a bank (Second Chance) to open new accounts and learn to save and manage their money. The Shelby County Trustee has partnered with RISE Memphis, United Way of the Mid-South and the University of Memphis Center for Economic Education and local banks and credit unions to provide incentives to open and maintain bank accounts. Incentives include lower minimum opening deposits (less than $35.00) and monthly service fees of no more than $5.00/month. Several of the program's participating financial institutions offer bank accounts that meet national Bank On Account Standards which means that the account cannot be overdrawn or charged an NSF/OD fee in addition to the low opening deposit and low/no monthly account fee. Bank on Memphis has partnered with the Greater Memphis Financial Empowerment Center to offer free, professional, one-on-one financial literacy counseling to all Shelby County residents.
