Shelby County Veterans Court

Description:

Provides separate court for veterans charged with a crime on a case by case basis based on eligibility guidelines; transfers from drug court and domestic violence court. Mentors (former military veterans) work with veterans who have been charged; veterans will also be directed into the VA services from this court. This court can also help veterans access mental health services if needed, and has case managers available to assist. The SC Veterans Court is part of the SC General Sessions Court Criminal Division (main phone for that division: 901-222-4800).

Hours:

Office Hours: Mon - Fri 9:00 am - 3:30 pm; court schedules vary but Veterans Court usually meets Wednesdays at 2:00 pm

Eligibility:

Veterans arrested in Shelby County who are referred to the court; also accepts transfers of veterans seen in other Shelby County courts

Volunteer Opportunities:

Mentors needed; call or apply online; must be a former military veteran (veterans of Iraq & Afghanistan are particularly needed), go through training, and be able to meet at least one hour a week with their assigned veteran with at least one year's commitment to the program
