Description:

Speech-language pathologists diagnose and treat:
Articulation disorders, or mispronunciation of speech sounds, such as saying "wabbit" for "rabbit."
Delayed Language, or slow development of vocabulary, sentence structure, and expression of ideas in infants and toddlers.
Aphasia, or speech and language disorders related to brain injury caused by strokes or head trauma.
Fluency Disorders, or stuttering.
Voice Disorders, including problems with pitch, hoarseness, and loudness.
Reverse Swallow, or tongue-thrust.
Speech problems associated with cleft palate, cerebral palsy, laryngectomy, hearing loss, and various neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease.

Special programs include:
Parent/Teacher Training programs for expectant parents and teachers of young children to help them become better language stimulators, prevent speech problems and alert them to early warning signs.
Preschool Screening program to screen speech-language-hearing skills of 3, 4, and 5 year olds in private preschools and to incorporate a variety of communication strategies. Latest technology for hearing aids and cochlear implants, and the most up-to-date teaching techniques will be utilized.

Early Start Child Hearing Services: an intensive therapeutic program for hearing impaired and deaf preschoolers.

Dysphagia program to evaluate and treat infants and adults who are experiencing swallowing problems associated with brain damage.

Hearing services include:
Hearing evaluations to assess the ability to hear and understand messages and sounds.
Immittance audiometry to determine the condition of the middle ear.
Central auditory processing testing to determine the presence of a hearing disability due to a reduced ability to understand what is heard.
Hearing aid evaluations and sales to provide the aid which best meets the needs of the person with a hearing loss.
Assistive listening devices such as flashing lights to alert the hearing impaired person to a baby's cry, or a ringing doorbell.
Speech reading, or lip-reading training.
Alternative communication system developed to best meet the needs of an individual.

Feeding and Swallowing services for infants, children and adults with problems caused by head trauma, stroke, cerebral palsy, and other neurological disorders include:
Diagnostic evaluations including videoflouroscopy, or video x-rays to observe the person as he attempts to swallow tiny amounts of barium.
Feeding and swallowing therapy to improve the person's ability to swallow food and liquids without danger of choking.
Consultation, services to physicians, hospitals, nursing homes, schools, and families.
Determine the safest way for the person to obtain nourishment, establish appropriate goals for improved swallowing, and train the family and caregivers to assist at all levels of this process.
