Firewood Stockpiling

Programs that offer the services of individuals, usually volunteers, who gather, cut, split, haul and/or stack firewood for people who need assistance.

Furnace Maintenance/Repair

Programs that offer the services of individuals who perform routine cleaning and maintenance of home heating units and repairs, where needed. Furnace maintenance checkups include inspection of the thermostat for proper operation, inspection of air filters and changing or cleaning them as necessary; checking electrical components and controls, oiling motors, as needed, inspecting the heat exchanger for possible cracks, checking the air flow and, if diminished, cleaning the evaporator coil, and checking the air fuel mixture, where appropriate.

General Minor Home Repair Programs

Programs that provide a variety of minor home repair services for homeowners who qualify. Specific services vary by organization but include such things as fixing leaky pipes and faucets; clearing clogged drains; replacing broken switches, sockets and electrical fixtures; changing light bulbs; fixing or replacing door locks and handles; replacing broken screen doors or window panes; installing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and changing batteries; making minor repairs on stair treads; replacing carpet threshold strips; and replacing furnace filters.

House Painting

Programs that provide labor and/or supplies for people who need to paint the interiors or exteriors of their homes as part of routine, ongoing maintenance.

Rain Gutter Clearance

Programs that offer the services of individuals who are available to clear gutters and down spouts of accumulated leaves and other debris, cover the gutters with mesh to prevent future problems, repair or replace broken or missing drainage equipment and perform other tasks to ensure the appropriate dispersal of rainwater.

Roof Maintenance/Repair

Programs that offer the services of individuals who inspect roofs for broken or missing shingles, apply new shingles, locate and fix leaks, winterize and waterproof the roof, remove moss or algae and accumulated debris, check the flashings and joints for holes or deterioration, and make minor repairs.

Water Heater Maintenance/Repair

Programs that offer the services of individuals who perform routine cleaning and maintenance of water heaters/hot water tanks. Services generally include inspections of the tank, pipe connections and valves for leaks, testing of the temperature/pressure relief valve, thermostat adjustments, draining and flushing of the tank to remove accumulated sediment and simple repairs, as necessary, to the thermostat, gauges and valves.
