Badminton

Programs, often offered by local badminton clubs, that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy badminton. The programs may provide badminton instruction and access to equipment and facilities; and may sponsor or make arrangements for players to participate in amateur badminton competitions.

Baton Twirling

Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy baton twirling, a sport in which the individual, while marching, performs a variety of maneuvers in which one, two or three batons (centrally balanced metal shafts with rubber ends) are twirled, tossed spinning into the air, and caught again. The programs may offer camps, clinics and workshops to help majorettes learn and practice the techniques and twirls associated with the sport; may provide opportunities for participants to join teams which march in parades or give twirling performances; and/or may sponsor or make arrangements for participation in individual and team baton twirling competitions. Baton twirling is a Junior Olympics sport.

Billiards/Pool/Snooker

Programs, often offered by local billiards clubs, that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy billiards, pool or snooker, which are table games that involve using a cue stick to knock one ball into another or into pockets on the side of the table. Billiards clubs and other recreational billiards programs are often organized into leagues which play one another in organized tournaments.

Boating

Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy the sport of boating using any of a wide variety of watercraft.

Bowling

Programs, often offered by local clubs, that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy the sport of bowling. Bowling clubs and other recreational bowling programs are often organized into leagues with teams that play one another in organized tournaments.

Boxing

Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy the sport of boxing. Included are recreational boxing programs for participants who are interested in the physical training and fun associated with the sport without competing; and Olympic-style boxing programs for people who may be interested in competition.

Cheerleading Programs

Programs that provide organized opportunities for people to learn and become competitive in cheerleading, the activity of calling for and directing organized cheering (as at a football game). Services may include coaching for individual cheerleaders or cheerleading squads, special camps where participants learn new skills and routines and organized competitions.

Disability Related Sports

Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages with functional or cognitive disabilities to learn, become competitive in and enjoy a wide variety of recreational activities and sports, many of which are played in wheelchairs or have otherwise been modified to accommodate the athletes' disabilities.

Fishing

Programs, often offered by local fishing clubs, that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn and enjoy the sport of fly and bait fishing in saltwater and freshwater environments. Many fishing clubs sponsor competitions for members. Also included are programs that maintain private stocked fishing preserves or fish camps that people who enjoy fishing can visit as a vacation option.

Flying Discs

Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy a variety of sports and games that involve throwing a Frisbee.

Gambling

Organizations that provide opportunities for people of legal age to wager money on games of chance or other activities in hopes of profiting from the outcome.

Games

Programs that provide opportunities for people to learn, become competitive in and enjoy card games, board games, lawn games and other mental or physical competitions which are governed by a set of rules and decided by skill or luck.

Golf

Programs, often offered by local golf associations or clubs, that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy golf. The programs may offer golf instruction, provide opportunities for golfers to play on a regular basis, make arrangements for golf outings and vacations, and/or sponsor or make arrangements for golfers to participate in amateur tournaments either locally or at golf resorts throughout the country.

Gymnastics

Programs, often offered by local gymnastics clubs, that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy gymnastics, the sport that involves floor exercises and use of the still rings, balance beam, vault, pommel horse, parallel bars, uneven bars, horizontal bars and other gymnastics equipment.

Horseback Riding

Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy in the art of equitation. The programs may provide western and English riding instruction, jumping instruction, dressage instruction, and opportunities for pleasure riding; and may sponsor horse shows or other informal competitions which enable students and other local riders to demonstrate the skills they have acquired.

Hunting

Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn and enjoy hunting, a sport in which game birds, game fowl and/or game animals are pursued and shot during approved hunting seasons, either for food or for trophies. Hunters generally use hunting rifles or bows and arrows and must have an appropriate license to legally pursue the sport.

Kite Flying

Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to make and fly their own kites, engage in kite flying competitions and participate in other activities that center around kites.

Martial Arts

Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy the martial arts, any of a variety of combat or self-defense arts that are practiced as sports.

Motorcycle Riding

Programs that provide opportunities for people of legal driving age to ride motorcycles as a recreational activity.

Mountain Climbing

Programs, often offered by local mountaineering clubs, that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn climbing skills and participate in mountaineering as a recreational activity.

Pickleball

Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy pickleball, a game played on a badminton court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center using a perforated plastic baseball (similar to a whiffle ball) and wood or composite paddles.

Scuba Diving

Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to explore the underwater world using underwater breathing equipment including a mask, fins, wetsuit, tank of compressed air, a mouthpiece connected by hose to the air tank and a pressure gauge which measures the amount of air consumed. Included are programs that provide diving instruction and issue diving certificates to those who have successfully completed the course.

Shooting

Programs, often offered by local gun and rifle clubs, that provide opportunities for people to learn, become competitive in and enjoy shooting. The programs are generally open to people of all ability levels; have divisions for juveniles as well as adults; provide practice and training sessions; offer firearm safety education; and may sponsor or make arrangements for members to participate in local competitions in which marksmen and women use pistols, rifles and/or shotguns to fire at stationary or moving targets from either a standing or prone position.

Skating

Programs, often offered by local skating clubs, that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy the sport of skating on a range of surfaces using a variety of equipment.

Skiing

Programs, often offered by local ski clubs, that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy skiing. The programs are generally open to people with a variety of ability levels and interests; and may organize ski trips and sponsor or make arrangements for athletes to participate in skiing competitions. Also included are programs that provide skiing instruction.

Skydiving

Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to jump from an airplane (wearing a parachute) with the objective of hitting a delineated target on the ground. Included are programs that provide skydiving instruction and issue skydiving certificates to those who have successfully completed the course.

Snorkeling

Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to explore the underwater world using a mask, fins and short breathing tube which enables them to take in air from the surface.

Swimming/Swimming Lessons

Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy swimming. Included are programs that provide swimming lessons for people who are unable to swim.

Table Tennis

Programs, often offered by local table tennis clubs, that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy table tennis, a game played on a tabletop with paddles and a small, plastic ball. The program may provide coaching assistance and access to necessary equipment and facilities; and may sponsor or make arrangements for athletes to participate in tennis table competitions.

Team Sports/Leagues

Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy the cooperative recreational activity or sport of their choice. These programs may provide coaching to help members play efficiently as a team and are often organized into leagues, i.e., groups of teams that are formed to play one another in organized competitions. Uniforms; access to playing fields, courts and other facilities; sporting equipment; and officials for competitions may also be available.

Tennis

Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy tennis. The programs may provide coaching assistance to help people play to the best of their ability and access to tennis courts and tennis equipment; and may sponsor make arrangements for players to participate in tennis tournaments and provide officials for the events.

Track and Field

Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages learn, become competitive in and enjoy one or more of the games that are associated with track and field including running, hurdling, pole vaulting, shot put, the long jump, the high jump, the triple jump, discus throwing, hammer throwing and javelin throwing. Heptathlon (a five event contest) and decathlon (a 10 event contest) are also part of track and field.

Weightlifting

Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn and enjoy the sport in which barbells of varying weights are lifted in competition or as a means of building strength while trimming fat. Traditional weightlifting competitions involve two lifts (the snatch and the clean-and-jerk), while contestants in powerlifting competitions attempt three types of lifts (the squat, bench press and deadlift) in a set sequence.
