Abuse Support Volunteer Opportunities

Community organizations that are actively seeking individuals with the requisite skills and experience who are willing to work on a voluntary basis without remuneration on projects that seek to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals who are vulnerable to abuse, neglect and/or exploitation.

Companionship Volunteer Opportunities

Organizations that are actively seeking individuals with the requisite skills who are willing, on a voluntary basis without remuneration, to provide friendship and shared activities and/or appropriate role models for individuals who suffer from lack of company, loneliness or social isolation; who need practice conversing in English; or who lack the companionship and guidance of an adult figure or model.

Foster Parenting Support Volunteer Opportunities

Organizations that are actively seeking individuals who are currently foster parents or who, as children, were in foster care, who are willing, on a volunteer basis without remuneration, to provide emotional support, encouragement and practical advice for individuals and families in a similar position.

Homeless Count Volunteer Opportunities

Organizations that are actively seeking volunteers to participate in annual efforts to get an accurate count of the number of homeless people in their community.

Homeless Shelter Volunteer Opportunities

Organizations that are actively seeking individuals who are willing, on a voluntary basis without remuneration, to work in homeless centers and provide a wide range of services for individuals and families living in temporary or transitional shelter situations. Tasks may include handling registration, distributing supplies and commodities, arranging for snacks and meals, designating sleeping areas and providing support for people in the shelter.

Parenting Support Volunteer Opportunities

Organizations that are actively seeking individuals with the requisite skills and experience who are willing to work, on a voluntary basis without remuneration, with expectant or new mothers and fathers who need emotional support, encouragement and practical advice. Volunteers may be asked to help new mothers and/or fathers adjust to being parents or offer classes or workshops for parents who are having difficulty or want to be more effective in their parenting role.

Personal Finances/Tax Assistance Volunteer Opportunities

Organizations that are actively seeking individuals with the requisite skills and experience who are willing, on a voluntary basis without remuneration, to help people obtain and responsibly use credit, obtain or correct information in their credit reports, reduce their debt burden, manage their financial resources more effectively, complete their tax returns during tax season or pay their bills in an orderly way. Included are organizations with volunteer positions for individuals who can manage the financial affairs of older adults with conditions like Alzheimer's disease or individuals with disabilities who are unable to handle the responsibility themselves. Tasks include receiving and depositing benefits checks from Social Security or other federal programs, and/or writing checks and paying bills for people served by the program.

Street Outreach Volunteer Opportunities

Organizations that are actively seeking individuals who are willing, on a voluntary basis without remuneration, to spend time with people who live on the street, build relationships with them, identify and address their immediate needs (e.g., crisis intervention, food, clean clothing, hygiene kits, blankets, someone to listen) and provide information about and linkage to longer-term forms of support such as shelter, counseling, drug and alcohol detoxification and rehabilitation, care/case management and, where applicable, family reunification services.
