Most post offices also have locked post boxes that customers can rent for delivery of their mail rather than relying on general mail delivery, a service that is provided at no cost.

Benefits may include a private, secure mailbox with a defined street address, not a P.O. box number, 24-hour security for mail pickup and identity protection, full service mail and package receiving from all carriers, notification when packages arrive, mail holding and forwarding, and the ability to call ahead to determine whether there is mail to be picked up.
